The Katsina State Government has taken a step toward enhancing banking services and financial literacy across the state through a landmark meeting between key financial stakeholders.
Hajiya Bilkisu Sulaiman Ibrahim, Special Adviser to the Governor on Banking and Finance, met with Alhaji Muhammad Sani, Branch Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Katsina Branch, to establish a framework for collaboration between the state government and banking institutions.
During the courtesy visit, Hajiya Bilkisu emphasized the department's ongoing efforts to strengthen relationships with financial institutions operating in Katsina.
"We have already engaged with all major commercial banks operating in the state to build cordial relationships that will benefit our citizens. Our department is fully prepared to formally invite the CBN to participate in all banking sector meetings as your input is crucial to our state-level initiatives," said Hajiya Bilikisu.
The Special Adviser also spotted the urgent need to address the licensing status of Katsina Amana Microfinance Bank, urging the CBN to intervene.
"The Department is ready to collaborate with the CBN in delivering financial inclusion and capacity-building programs across the state. We believe this partnership will significantly improve our citizens' understanding and utilization of financial services," the Special Adviser stressed further.
Responding to the initiatives, Alhaji Muhammad Sani expressed appreciation for the unprecedented engagement from a government department.
"This is truly refreshing. In my time here, this marks the first instance where a government agency has proactively reached out to establish such communication channels. Closing the communication gap between commercial banks and the government is not just necessary but timely for economic development," Alhaji Sani remarked.
The CBN Branch Controller expressed optimism that the Katsina model of engagement could serve as a template for other states.
"I hope this approach will be replicated across other states in Nigeria. Our region continues to face significant challenges due to a general lack of financial knowledge, and increased financial literacy and access to banking services are crucial for development," Sani explained.
While rounding off the session, Hajiya Bilkisu reaffirmed her department's commitment to supporting CBN initiatives throughout the state.
"We request that the CBN notify our department of any new policies or initiatives that could benefit Katsina State so that we can conduct appropriate awareness and advocacy campaigns for the benefit of our citizens," she concluded.
